Paint Brushes
Paint brushes vary to suit different paints as well as
painting techniques. It is possible to purchase paintbrushes designed
for oils, inks, watercolors, and acrylics. Different styles of brushes
may be created for calligraphy, covering broad areas, and detail work.
Nylon paint brushes are excellent for both oils and acrylics. The soft
bristles allow for smooth and even application of paint. Synthetic brushes
in general are better for acrylics as those paints are more caustic.
For the same reason, brushes created from sable are used primarily with
oils only.
Flat paint brushes are used to cover an even area, while round brushes
are used for details. A short flat brush is known as a bright and used
for pushing paint into the canvas. A mop style brush may be preferred
for applying softer glazes over large areas.
